Agoom
By FinalGamer

In the beginning there was us
Servants of a kingdom of innocence
Blessed with fungal heads
Filled with spores of knowledge.

A benevolent empire ruled us
If anything too benevolent
For some of us began to want more
Than mundane niceties.

A life lived in simple repetition
May as well not be a life at all
When we lusted for adventure
Beyond the kingdom borders.

One day came news of a lizard king
Young and eager to conquer all
With a passion for adventure
And a heart of darkness.

Some of us were frightened
While others were fascinated
Especially one of us in particular
Whose name was Agoom.

Eventually came dissatisfaction
Among the subjects of the kingdom
And one day it came
The day of the Mushroom Revolt.

A coup to aid the lizard king
To only fail in total banishment
To only work in our favour
As we became loyal to the tyrant enemy.

Fuelled by anger we began to change
As if poisoned by our greed
When the fungus on our heads collapsed
And rotted most foul unto our bodies.

Smearing us within our disgusting shame
Our arms became trapped
As if to strip away our freedom
When only our feet remained untouched.

We became mutants, warped by sin
Mushy lumps waddling across the land
Only for our children to become the same
Inheriting our sins in physical form.

Years have passed since that fateful change
And our lives have overcome it well
To be treated as equals once again
With those whom we once betrayed.

We shall never forget why we are
But we do not let it stop us from living.
After all, is it right for our children to suffer
The sins of their fathers many years ago
All beginning with one called Agoom?

Ever since then we inherited his name
To become known as Goombas
Now to us it is only a name
As our own race, unlike anyone else.
When finally, we are free ourselves.
I was listening to a wonderful chiptune song by Nullsleep - [link] - called Kuribo's Requiem (Kuribo being the Japanese name for Goomba) and it made me ponder on what a Goomba would think about concerning themselves and their race.

And then I remembered this interesting piece of info from the very first Super Mario Bros game manual:
"A mushroom that betrayed the Mushroom Kingdom."

So apparently they were once part of the Mushroom Kingdom and betrayed it to side with Bowser.
When I was young I always assumed they were actually once Toads and were changed by this betrayal. I don't know if they had always retained this shape even before their betrayal or their shape was because of it, but to me the latter stuck in my mind more strongly.

Taking some inspiration from Genesis in the Bible and on the concept of Original Sin, I thought this would make an interesting poem. I hope you enjoy.

Wow, you are unique about taking something mundane into videogames and really give it a TWIST. I love it, but it's so disturbing I sure will have nightmares :P
